Virginia State Master Beekeeper

On November 2, 2019 (1 day short of one year after embarking on this quest), I completed the testing in the Va. State Master Beekeeper Program through the VSBA (Va. State Beekeepers Association). This involved the testing for Apprentice, Journeyman and Master Beekeeper. Three written tests, a colony inspection(s), a microscopic exam and an oral exam in front of a panel of Master Beekeepers (answering 6 questions composed by beekeepers from around the state). This was indeed a humbling experience. There is so much to learn about our pollinators and so little time. The last thing I heard that day after passing the oral exam was “protect our honey bees”.

There are many stressors pressuring our bees, the least of which is definitely not homeowners. Did you know that homeowners use more pesticides than commercial people? This is a very sobering thought. So before you spray, please read the labeling and do your research. The variety in our food supply depends on you and me. Our bees need our help and consideration. Thank you for your care.

At the end of that last long weekend. I had invested 14 hours in the final stage of the testing. I was a tired beekeeper! I had been studying all week and had read sooo much for over 4&1/2 years leading up to that weekend. The learning is just beginning! 😉
